![]() Yesterday was just some random Wednesday, and if you didn’t have a top tier team who could beat it in a few tries, you had to spend hours at it - only to be left with nothing if you couldn’t do it in time. The fact that it’s only available during the Daily Heroic is rough to begin with. So what’s wrong with the Black Spindle mission? Where do I start? They made me made me question how much of my time and myself I’m investing in the game. The missions grated on my nerves so much in fact, I’m actually considering taking a fairly lengthy break from the game itself. In 500 hours of play, I have never been more controller-throwingly frustrated than I was with Destiny yesterday. The counter-argument is “well it’s supposed to be hard, it’s a guaranteed exotic and that kind of thing shouldn’t be easy.” While I get that, I think there’s a line, and The Black Spindle mission steps way over it. I’m well aware that there will be two camps in this debate, those who agree with me (and probably don’t have the Spindle now) and those that don’t (who probably did manage to get it). It's not just punishing in its difficulty, but in its structure and mechanics as well. That said, The Black Spindle Taken hunt is far and away the most poorly designed mission in Destiny. I’ve said previously I’m not in favor of many of these quests ending in forced group play activities that require a fireteam to beat, but I get the appeal of quest+secret+challenge=specific exotic. I’m also a fan of the general idea that specific exotics can now be earned by lengthy or secret quests rather than just running the Nightfall 40 times and hoping for that Gjallarhorn drop. It's a joy to witness and exemplifies everything awesome about the game. The implication here is that other secret missions could be found in the game now, and that’s a really awesome kind of easter egg hunt for the community. But no one actually used those clues! The mission was discovered by accident. It turned out later that when dismantling the Black Hammer, the precursor legendary weapon to the Black Spindle, the resulting rune gave some clues as to where this mission could be found. The fact that an entirely unknown exotic was hidden in some nook and cranny of some random story mission is the kind of thing that makes Destiny and its endless Taken King mysteries great. I’ll start off by saying that there is a lot about this secret Black Spindle mission that as I love as a concept. I’m in the latter camp, and I’ve had some time to reflect on the experience. As soon as it was revealed that this mission only appeared when this specific moon assignment was the Daily Heroic, players scrambled to beat it before the day was up. The past 24 hours have been some of the most frenzied in Destiny’s history.
